Lima, sept. 01 (ANDINA)- President García stated that Peru’s government is on a “clear recovery path” after August 15 earthquake and he urged people to demand public works from their local authorities.
“All these problems over the last two weeks are common; however, government keeps on a steady path, with further decisions and resources. People must demand better management and greater honesty from their current local authorities”, García told RPP radio.
At that end, García denied possible divergences between the central Government and local authorities from Ica in order to join efforts in the earthquake recovery program. He pointed out that the true and deepest state reform is decentralization, because it promotes more effective execution of projects by incorporating the great resources of the will and imagination of peruvians through their local authorites.
“Therefore, I will insist on reassigning funds for works and new investments to regional and local governments, and and let the people be the ones to mand that projects be completed more rapidly”, he said.
President García mentioned Peru has faced the mother of all tragedies, August 15 earthquake hit Peru’s southern cities killing hundreds of people and leaving thousands homeless; afterwards, many cities affected by this magnitude 7.9 earthquake lack access to basic services such water, drainage, electricity, telephone and transportation.
“This is a matter of national interest that involves all Peru and not just Ica region. There is no way we can leave aside local authorities since it would go against our will and Peru’s decentralization policy” he stated.
President García will head to Pisco today to supervise the relief and rehabilitation work in the quake-stricken areas.
