International aid for Peru earthquake reaches US$32 million

Lima, set. 03 (ANDINA).- August 15 earthquake has mobilized the spirit of cooperation and solidarity towards Peru by providing relief supplies as food, blankets, clothes and other provisions equal to 15 thousand tons, and cash donations amounting to US$ 32 million up until now. Pledges from countries and international organizations rise this amount to US$ 89 million.

This was reported by Chancellor José Antonio García Belaunde within Parliament Commission of Foreign Affairs Motion headed by Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga.

Minister García Belaunde also stated that donations made by international and private organizations have been added to the ones granted by Federal Governments as Germany and Autonomous Governments as Catalonia and Andalusia (Spain), or have been channeled through humanitarian organizations as Great Britain did through Care Peru.

He added that earthquake relief efforts from Argentina (seven relief airplanes), Cuba (a hospital), Mexico (a hospital ship), Bolivia and Colombia  have been channeled throught the National Institute for Civil Defense (INDECI) and regional governments. “Peru's Chancellor's Office does not administer the earthquake relief, it only channels it”, said Minister García Belaunde in response to the questions asked by the congresspersons who are members of the Commission.
