Lima, aug. 23 (ANDINA).- The United Nations Fund approved US$ 10 million relief aid to Peru's Earthquake Victims in the Southern Region of the country, said UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Jorge Chediek
Chediek pointed out that this is a revolving fund to be distributed as follows: US$4.4 million for housing; US$200 thousand to create jobs for quake-affected people; an additional US$100 thousand for Peruvian National Institute of Civil Defence (INDECI) to strengthen logistics capacity during the emergency.
Also, US$ 2.2 million for food relief; US$ 200 thousand for water and children’s sanitation; US$ 50 thousand for Women's health services; US$ 900 thousand to support national emergency response system; US$ 500 thousand to help children go back to school; and one million dollars for emergency food supplies.
Different UN entities with ongoing missions in Peru will take part in this relief effort; such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
He also stated that a UN-sponsored donors meeting to be held on Tuesday, August 28 in Geneva, Switzerland will coordinate additional relief efforts according to short-term and long-term priorities for Peru’s Government.
In a press conference with Peru's Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo, alongside Chancellor José García Belaunde and other high-level officials; Chediek emphasized the “huge effort” done by peruvian Government to respond to earthquake emergency.
