Lima, aug. 24 (ANDINA).- Peru’s President Alan García decorated Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone with the Peruvian Order of the Sun in the grade of Great Cross for having strengthened relationships between the Vatican and Peru.
During a ceremony held at the Golden Room of the Government Palace, the Head of State thanked the Holy Father and the Catholic Church for the concern and support provided to earthquake-affected people in the South of Peru.
“The Cardinal’s presence shows the great love that the Pope and the Vatican have for our deeply Catholic people”, said President García to Vatican Secretary.
In turn, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone thanked the award and the displays of affection, and he pointed out that Pope Benedict XVI expressed his concern for the victims since the first moment Peru earthquake became known.
At the end of the ceremony, the prelate gave President García the book “The City of Peter. History, Art and Treasure” and a medal sent by the Holy Father.
